I don't think I've seen anything as good as Aiden's performance tonight in all my years watching my beloved Celtic. What the bhoy did up in the park was simply as good as it gets. I was absolutely spellbound and stood in awe as he repeatedly terrorised the two players designated to mark him. Such was his majesty they rarely got close enough to foul him and his array of skills were a complete joy to behold. I'm not ashamed to say I shed a tear near the end when he held off Luisao from the long clearance, killed the ball in one touch and then in an instant flicked it over his head and was away. Incredible.

Disaster.
We're in the dingy hostel we usually stay in but one of the lads booked us into a 14 bed dorm instead of a 4 bed room. As a result I'll be staying on the internet for the night ahead of my 7.55am flight back to Dublin as I don't want my private bits fiddled around with.
In the meantime I invite further discussion on Aiden McGeady's display tonight - on further reflection I want to upgrade my original comment. It was in fact one of the greatest performances of this, or indeed any other, era.

Yeah I thinking there'd be a post about this OK.
He was really superb, hold up play and everything was top notch.
Makes you wonder what sort of management skills Staunton has to get him to perform so poorly for Ireland.
I think the sort of things he was doing, could play in any team in the world.
I knew he was good before but not this good.
Somebody was on another thread yesterday calling him a one-trick pony!

Jaysus what game was I watching....
Done alright, but such superlatives...?
Gammy goal too, but not his fault I guess.

Yes good performance but lets see him do it week in and week out, I thought his tracking back was immense too. Special mention to Hartley and McDonald too for sheer bravery and commitment. Still if we had a half decent Centre Forward we'd have won by at least 3, that must be our priority in January.

'Somebody was on another thread yesterday calling him a one-trick pony!'
that in fact was me, and I'll give him credit for a great display last night but won't get carried away either and neither should you, even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day.
Remember, Benayoun scored a hat trick last night, is he now as prolific as RVN in europe ?? Also benfica are far from worlld beaters, they've only beaten one team in champs league this year- Celtic!!
PS Clarebhoy, from previous thread, I never compared Petrov to mcgeady. Also the reason maradona and pele were remembered for world cup performances was because it was the main stage they could play on and excel on, with a large audience. the champions league and it's vast coverage wasn't in existance.hence maradona and pele will be known for world cups and as your fellow 'hoop dreamer' bandage has pointed out (this thread's title gives it away !!) that Irish international players are remembered with great performances in champions league ahead of internationals because it is now the main stage.

JVOH was at Centre Forward with Skippy as his foil. what match were you watching?, My point is JVOH isn't good enough, no pace, no confidence and lacking goals, now if Skippy were 6 inches taller maybe we could play him centre forward.

Defenders are defenitly Celtics prority, they looked dodgy against an average enough Benfica side.
AM was class, anybody who disputes that simply hasn't a clue or has pre-concieved attitude towards him/Celtic.

Jan VoH is just back from injury...although I am begining to lose patience with him...they also have Killen, Zurawski, Riordan...need to get rid of 1 or 2 before they sign anyone new

Hyperbolé par excellence, without a hint of bias. He was pretty good. No more. Granted it was a little late when you wrote this and your brain was probably slightly addled after the night's events. Not sure what you would write if his goal was like the one Sektioui grabbed for Porto against Marseille last night.
Haven't a clue what he's like week in week out, only see him play the odd time. No real opinion on him, it would be great for Ireland if he was the epoch defining superstar as alluded to above but if last night is his entry, then forget about it.

No chewfaille, I reiterate my comments from last night. It was one of the best individual displays I've ever had the pleasure to witness. If it was by a player playing for one of the EPL teams in the competition then RTE would be raving about it for weeks. Alas, they have their preconceived ideas about Celtic and indeed Aiden, who they wrote off after watching him play twice for Ireland in the dying embers of the Staunton regime.
Talking of RTE, I've said it on here before but the punditry is incredibly lazy on their coverage and Brady, Giles and Dunphy are stuck in a comfort zone whereby they simply don't bother doing any research on the teams other than solely providing coverage from the perspective of the English teams involved.
I'm sure most people don't mind if they're coming out with their usual, 'I don't know much about them' rubbish if it's a Besiktas or a Dynamo Kiev or someone but the hordes of Irish Celtic supporters deserve better than lazy generalisations and blatant inaccuracies caused by the fact they can't be bothered finding out anything about the side. If I had such little knowledge about a subject then I wouldn't be so forthright in delivering scathing criticism on it but it's the polar opposite on RTE.
I gather they had quite a go at Aiden before the game last night yet then didn't have the good grace to admit they wrong after his performance. I'm off to have a look for it online before resuming a private email with Stephen Alkin on the topic.
In other news I'm just back from the game and the absolute s****g hun b*****ds that were on the flight this morning from Galsgow to Dublin was amazing. They must have got cheap flights to go to Barcelona through Dublin or something and there was probably about 15 or 20 of them on it. Obviously there was a big Celtic contingent too and initially the huns were sheepish enough but as the plane was landing they burst into their sick song about Big Jock, The Sash, a load of others from their collection and shouting sectarian abuse at everyone generally.
There was a potential flashpoint for a while and they were shouted down and told to shut up in no uncertain terms (especially by Rocko!) but they thought they were right hard men. Yet then they all waited behind on the plane until everyone else got off before disembarking in one big unit like the cowardly --------s that they are.
I also see they began rioting in Barcelona last night (a day earlier than usual) and I really hope they get a horrible kicking on the pitch and from the Spanish police. Absolute animals.

Talk about getting carried away there Bandage, Keane whose team was 2 goals down, playing away in the CL semifinal and booked himself, out of the final........versus mc Geady playing at home, in a group game, with the score 0-0!! He was good but not that good!!

You might also mention to Alkin that if RTE is going to have 3 people on the panel, they might as well assign at least one of them to watching the game they're not broadcasting live.
I didn't watch RTE last night (thanks to TVAnts, I was able to watch a free S. African feed on my missus' laptop), but caught the highlights and the panel's comments on the match.
It really was cringeworthy stuff. Three old men lining up to comment on a poorly produced highlights package. And then simply rehashing their preconceived ideas about McGeady before the sychophantic backslapping about just what hard men Giles and Souness were.
I don't know how anyone could be bothered listening to Giles preaching about what it was like in the 1960s and 1970s. If I want to know history I'll watch Reeling in the Years, thank you very much.

Taken from Football365 website. Is this a bit of an exaggeration???
Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc believes Aiden McGeady has the potential to be better than Cristiano Ronaldo.
McGeady grabbed the only goal of the game on Tuesday night to hand Celtic a crucial win over Benfica in the Champions League.
And Boruc insisted: "Aiden was really unbelievable. He made so many great runs and was so important for our team.
"I think he can be better than Cristiano Ronaldo. That's my opinion. Aiden is still young and can only get better.
"I've played a few games against Ronaldo now and, while it's hard to compare the two players, Aiden has the ability to be better."

Couldnt tell you if he's referring to ronaldo past or present. He's a bit of work to do if he's to become the next CR tho IMO. Hopefully the next Ireland manager will be able to get the best out of him. Good player.

Saying it was in fact one of the greatest performances from this or any other era is a whole lot different from saying it's one of the greatest performances you have witnessed.
And of course your opinion is completely coloured by your unashamed bias towards all things Celtic.
Hyperbolé. You're a fan, it's forgiveable but don't present it as fact.
Celtic and Rangers fans on the one flight? I'd say the flight crew just loved every minute of that. So the Rangers were shouting sectarian abuse at everyone generally? And all the Celtic fans just sat silently by? Hmmmm.

Bandage - whats his email - stephen.alkin@rte.ie ? I'd like to throw my weight behind a few things - e.g. why they show Liverpool when UTV do as well. Nothing more frustrating than flicking around and seeing the same match on 2 stations - doesnt make any sense
