Attention now turn to Waterford vs Clare

Now that the hurling championship has begun in earnest the first of the Munster games start this Sunday and what an interesting game it should turn out to be.
Waterford will be favourites with the bookies but for me, the background to this game do not back up that favouritism.
On paper, with a full squad, Waterford would appear to be the stronger of the two teams. But that is not the case. First of all, we have a few injured players that are vital to the team and while the guys coming in will give it their all, they have a lot to step upto. One also has to question Waterfords attitude to Munster this season. Without doubt, we still have ambitions of winning an All Ireland no matter how misplaced that optimism may be in other peoples eyes. But this team is not capable of playing 3 games in Munster and then be fresh for the All Ireland series. So the will to win at all costs on Sunday will be questionable.
Then you have the Clare situation. A nice mix of seasoned and new players playing under a new manager. No doubt Clare will be fired up to at least win this game but i also believe Clare have a target of reaching the Munster final and why not. Its very doable and if i was a betting man, i would make it a Tipp vs Clare Munster final with the former being crowned Munster champions.
So there are my thoughts, even though I am a Waterford man, i fancy Clare for those reasons and would not be overly disappointed to lose on Sunday should it be of benefit to Waterford later in the championship. Some exciting days lie ahead in the coming weeks and months.

There seems to be a lot of talk coming out of Waterford a long the lines of it not been a big deal if they lose to Clare on Sunday and would probably be better off going the qualifier route, if the team take this attitude it could be a very dissapointing game on sunday.

The rumor mill that had the whole team injured is now nearly after turning full circle with on Ken and Murphy our
And we have all seen Ken make miraculous recovering for the 1st round over the past 10 years

hi blanco,
well i certainly am in no position to speak on behalf of the waterford team and i am merely speculating that they may not take the munster championship serioiusly as it has been a long time since a team won 3 munster matches and then went onto claim the all ireland. add in the fact that we are missing some `genuinely` injured players on sunday, it very easy to see why waterford may not take the winning of the game seriously.
having said that, if we lose, i hope we dont start using excuses such as this for losing. clare deserve a lot of respect too.

Looking forward to the game ok.
I hope I`m wrong about this but I think Waterford forwards will just be able to take their scores a bit easier.
Clare will put up a great fight, and Mac will have them rearing to go, but I`ll go for Waterford by maybe 5 or 6 points.
Also a bit concerning that D McMahon, Griffin, Carmody and Quinn have played very little league action
(I also think D O`Rourke`s injury is very bad news for Clare )

Much as I loathe to say it, I think defeat to the Banner is on the cards.

Rich, will the Waterford fans travel On sunday, according to A Waterford lad I work with he reckons there will be a low Waterford turn out, seemingly a lot of waterford fans are not happy with the choice of venue.

After a 6 year hiatus I am very much looking forward to going along. However I am a tad concerned that after not having missed a game in about 10 years (the highlight for me was beating Tipp in the 98 semi final in Cork ) , the summer after I emmigrated Waterford won munster for the first time in 40 years. Am I the jinx?

Didn`t get home until 10.30 after the 2004 League Final with the traffic after the game.
Limerick is a f**ying disaster for Waterford fans.
It`s not our bloody fault that ye built a white elephant and are now looking for games everywhere to (try to ) fill the place.

i live aprox 25 km from Limerick on the tipp rd side, and find it no worse than getting outa Thurles or Cork, so just get on with the game and stop ye`re moanin, if ye`re good enough ye`ll have a game in thurles v Limerick a few weeks later.

Ladies whatever about the location of the Stadium, which compared to Cork, Thurles or Walsh Park is equally hard to get out of.
Waterford scummers! Dont be making excuses already about losing to Clare. I have the utmost confidence that ye will win.

After having a sneaking feeling for Clare some time back, I`m beginning to change my mind because of the lack of progress on McMahon, Griffin and Carmody. I don`t think O` Rourke is as big a loss though.
Waterford to get through, I`d guess.

Yes, met a few of them last weekend and they weren`t going. Not diehards but they would if it was Thurles. But they tell me the team are fired up for it. You never know...

Think Waterford still have too much firepower for Clare, whose record in Munster for the last few years is appalling. I really don`t see where the optimism for Clare is coming from except as a flip side to negative stuff from Waterford. Where are the scores going to come from?

Will you ever fup off back to thefreekick.com for yourself, you`re not wanted here, coming on slagging Country people again............
You`re right actually our optimism is based mainly on the fact that Waterford are likely to be missing Ken McGrath and Eoin Murphy and also have 3 or 4 more who may not have done a huge amount of hurling over the past month or so.
We could even get a bad hammering but that said historically Clare never fear Waterford like they do Tipp, Cork or Limerick

outside of jamsie, griffin, mcmahon, carmody and clancy are as good or better than anything loughnane had in the 90s.these are all capable of scoring.theyll also be expecting a decent return from o flaherty.especially from frees which he is very good at.colin lynch is also capable of chipping in with a couple of scores.its the other end id be more worried about.especially the fuu back line.

Ive been travelling to games since 1992 and wont be going on Sunday. If they wanted to declare Clare as the home team fine make the game in Ennis. Instead of doing it the sneaky way.

Remember that the last time these teams met in c`ship Clare won. Our record v Wd is very good bar the one obvious blip. Our county champions beat theirs this year and they (like ourselves ) were no great shapes in the league. I`d never fear Waterford and throw in the few injuries they have, can you now see why we`re optimistic?

I think Clare will post ~ 2-14.
Our current forwards are better than the Limerick sextet that beat Waterford last year. I dont think we are carring a Niall Moran or a Barry Foley or somebody as one dimensional and static as Brian Begley.
Griffin/Carmody and Clancy will all score with ball in hand. So will Gilligan. Lynch could chip in from MF also. Flaherty is completely untested.McMahon tends to score v 2nd tier counties and has a good strike rate v Waterford.
But like bbDC, its what could happen at the other end that dampens my optimism.
Our half back line have to be extremely tight to stem the flow inside.
Waterford will have very similar problems at the back.
Which is why i dont think this will be close. One of them will collapse

Ciderbaby, have Waterford and Clare met in the championship since Waterford beat Clare in 2004?
I do agree Clare have a great chance although i think Clare might be under more pressure than we are in Waterford. We also have a few new lads in who beat Kilkenny without the `stars` last week in a challenge (i know you cant read too much into that ) but.....
What i do dismiss is those who dismiss Clare in this game. Clare could easily reach the Munster final this year.

That`s right. It was the final day of the Willie Clancy festival.
Should Waterford not be trying to win Munster as that gets them into the AI semi final?
If they lose Sunday, they probably play Antrim. Win that and it is the probable Munster semi-final loser (say, Clare or Tipp, and they can`t play Clare again ) so Tipp. If they win that, they play loser of a provincial final, say Dublin or Limerick in a 1/4 final.
That could be an easier path to a semi all right I suppose.
