O’Dea denies reports of imminent Dell closure Print
Defence Minister Willie O`Dea has denied being informed by Dell exc utives that the computer giant plans to end its Irish operations early next year.
Reports yesterday claimed the US firm had privately told Mr O`Dea and Tánaiste Mary Coughlan that it planned to wind down the operation in January.
However, the Limerick TD is insisting that the report was untrue and "grossly irresponsible".
There has been widespread speculation about the closure of Dell`s Raheen facility in recent weeks, leaving 3,000 workers in Limerick concerned about their future.
"Defence Minister Willie O`Dea has denied being informed by Dell exc utives that the computer giant plans to end its Irish operations early next year."
So will he admit who told him then?

DEFENCE Minister Willie O`Dea last night vehemently denied reports that Dell has told the Government that it is to wind down its massive Limerick facility from January.
Speculation has mounted over the US firm`s intentions since it was reported it was trying to sell off factories in an effort to cut costs and improve profitability.
Dell has admitted it wants to reduce expenses so that in 2010 its costs are $3bn (€2.2bn ) a year lower than they were in 2007.
The firm currently employs 3,000 people at its manufacturing facility in Limerick and a further 1,350 people at its sales and marketing operation in Dublin and Wicklow.
The current speculation centres on the future of the Limerick site at Raheen amid fears Dell will downscale the site to cut costs.
The `Wall Street Journal` revealed last month Dell was considering closing its Irish plant and yesterday it was claimed Dell told the Government and the IDA it plans to wind down operations in January 2009.
Former Fine Gael leader and Limerick East TD Michael Noonan urged ministers to make a statement. "The Dell workforce are very worried and concerned about their future employment and they deserve to know what is going on," Mr Noonan insisted.
But Mr O`Dea last night said reports he had been privately informed of such a move was "totally untrue".
"That`s just a total untruth, a total lie," the minister said.
"I haven`t spoken to a Dell exc utive in I`d say about three years, and I know the Tanaiste hasn`t been informed about any decision by Dell either because I`m keeping in close touch with her about the situation."
Speculation
A spokesperson for the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment last night insisted no decision had been made regarding the plant.
"No decision has been made regarding the plant in Limerick. Anything else is pure speculation."
Fine Gael TD Kieran O`Donnell and Labour TD Jan O`Sullivan urged the Government to pull out all the stops to save Dell jobs.
A spokesman for Dell said a report yesterday of a January closure was "completely untrue and without foundation".

Nothing against Willie O`Dea but you`d be concerned by the fact that he hasn`t spoken to a Dell exc utive in three years. Politicians will do their utmost to get them and their utmost to keep them when it looks like they`re going but what do they do in between? Does it not remind ye of them banging on your door looking for a certain something every five years?

Hard to know what is going on here. We are constantly being told that Limerick is the jewel of the Crown in Dells operations. Someone else said if you plan your life according to what you think this crowd will do then you are on a hiding to nothing. I said on another thread that Sercom are leaving people go and apparently the reason for this is that the notebook lines are going to Poland, I think that means laptops. The other computers will continue to be made in Limerick. The same lad that told me that works in Sercom and he also said Flextronics are leaving some go as well.

Dont believe the penalty for that would be significant anyway. I was told that it was a standard amount, and that it was only around €1,000,000. Not sure how true that is though.

If O` Dea hasn`t spoken to a Dell exc utive in three years - that`s a poor reflection on the guy as a public representative.

Sunday Indo gave Willie "19,000 first preference votes" O`Dea his own column , where he basically parrots what Dept of Finance say, I know of a case where someone tried to ask him a question at a local meeting and O`Dea made a show of him, not by answering the question (which was a good and fair one ) but by saying how he got 19,000 plus more votes than he did.....

Jewel in the crown means nothing danny, wasn’t the Proctor and Gamble nenagh plant the most productive in the world for 2 years running a while back?
Dell have the land bought in Poland, we’ve all seen it. I would bet Willie knows fine well whats coming down the tracks but understandably is not going to say anything. They all knew about Aer Lingus pulling out of Shannon too and kept schtum about it.
TBH when you can act like this and still be guaranteed at least 16,000 1st preferences in the next election you have to ask who’s the real villian here? Didn’t the FF female [name escapes me] TD from Nenagh retain her seat a few weeks after the P&G announcement ffs.

Hoctor wasnt it, the apathy of people is breathtaking, IMO the problem is having local elected officials doing the gombeen work which ensures they get in, they go to the Dail and do nothing for 5 years (literally nothing ) , and lets face it, once someone gets the nod from FF, doesnt matter what they`re like they have a great chance of getting....What will make people wake up a little and take a bit of interest in the news and the powers of those TDs in their areas like d**e Roche etc, and not from the Sun or Daily Sport....

No respect to o Dea, what a non entity as a politician, basicaally he is his position because he can do PR no matter what the circumstances, name one achievement as a minister, however main point, does any one really think if the numbers add up in a certain way, Dell are going to give a toss what O Dea or any other minister says, that will be final decsion rationale

the meeting is a comms meeting which is held every month. pretty routine.
all this malingering is only making it harder. if they would just come out and say it. they say they don`t respond to rumours, if they would just set the record straight, no one would pay heed to the media.
rumour has it that the weekend shift is going to be cancelled sooner rather than later.
they owe the people of dell at least the truth.
Dell 3 opened in 1999, think they got a 10 year grant.
Remember, the government knew about Aer Fungus pulling out of Shannon Heathrow route a long time before it became public.
I don`t really have much faith in them.

Tanaiste holds meeting with Dell management over Limerick factory
Dell

By Nick Rabbitts
THE Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan, met with senior management from Dell, this Thursday, to discuss the future of its European manufacturing headquarters in Raheen, where 3,000 people are employed.
The high-level meeting took place following a Dell Board meeting in the United States earlier this week at which the future of the company`s plant in Limerick was on the agenda.
All parties were remaining tight-lipped, this Thursday, following the meeting but Defence Minister, Willie O` Dea told the Limerick Leader that further meetings are planned. "The details of today`s meeting are confidential but the Tanaiste has told me she will be meeting with management from Dell again," he said.
Earlier Minister O`Dea stressed that he did not know what Dell intends to do and he confirmed he intends to complain the Irish Mail on Sunday to the Press Council for stating that he had been told by Dell bosses that they had decided to close the plant.
He also attacked opposition TD`s for "carrying on the lie" into a Dail debate on the issue on Wednesday night. "It is a total abuse of the Dail privilege, I wonder would they be brave enough to make those accusations outside the chamber," the Minister said.
When the Dail debate took place late on Wednesday evening, Limerick deputies Jan O`Sullivan, Labour, and Kieran O`Donnell, Fine Gael, said they were "astounded" to discover that, rather than face the issue herself the Tanaiste sent Minister of State with responsibility for Labour Affairs, Billy Kelleher, to face the questions.
And despite a four-page written response, only the first paragraph refers explicitly to the computer giant, founded by Michael Dell in Texas in 1984.
"I can confirm the IDA has been engaged in extensive discussions with the company concerned at the highest level. The Tanaiste need hardly say that such contacts always proceed on a confidential basis," the answer read.

People in Dell are now grasping at straws. Several people have tried to convince me that the Limerick Leader has never been particularly kind to Dell and that they are trying to stir the schite!!!
It is a disgrace that these people are so unsure and worried about their livelihoods that they are now drawing up conspiracy theories. Whoever is behind this i.e. the exc utives, should be stoned and castrated for the hardship and misery that they are putting these people through.
they should just come out and say it. it would be easier for people to comprehend in the long run if they knew of their fate. this crap of holding out and then drop ping the bomb on them is a joke

There was a programme on RTE a few months ago showing the new site Dell bought in Poland it was right beside the new Proctor & Gamble plant ffs.
Its not a question of” if” but “when” are Dell gonna leave Limerick ffs. I’d say the announcement will be in the next 12 months, all the government are doing is stalling Dell on announcing- They know exactly their plans. We saw with Aer Lingus they cannot be trusted.
In 3 years time there will be a small pocket of staff left doing basic admin jobs and possibly some post production work, this will eventually be phased out also.

I thought the Wall Street Journal had implied that Dell wants out of production. In that case the plant would be sold rather than closed, I`d have thought. Some chinese crowd maybe? Strip the technology and ride the horse to death. Layoffs would follow alright, but hardly the job lot, or at least not immediately.
Management buy-out an option, I wonder?

I heard something along those lines and that the Dell Poland project is off the cards for the foreseeable future. They wanted to bring all the eastern European people that are currently working in the Limerick plant back to Poland and pay them at a lower wage than they get here. Think the Polish unions are saying they should get paid the same rate in Poland as they do in the Irish factory.
