Brian Cowen, Politician 1960-2008. This portrait, acquired uncommissioned by the National Gallery, celebrates one of the finest politicians produced by Ireland since the foundation of the state.
Following a spell at the helm of the Department of Finance during a period of unprecedented prosperity, Brian Cowen inherited the office of Taoiseach in 2008. Balancing a public image that ranges from fantastically intelligent analytical thinker to Big Ignorant F***er from Offaly, the Taoiseach proves to be a challenging subject to represent.
The artist deserves some kind of award for this act of genius.

RTE certainly don`t deserve an award for cravenly apologising for doing a news story about these portraits. I know he`s a Glorious Leader, but when did Ireland turn into the Democratic People`s Republic of Korea? As for the police wasting their time on it ...

Its a typical bully tactic by Irish people, things aren`t going our way i.e. the big R. To make ourselves feel better we mock those who are in authority and this goes too far. If your children or anyone you know create d a disgusting nude of their teacher, you would be disgusted. What if it was one of your relations. This is really poor taste on the artists side and we shouldn`t condone it.

the three charges the guards are investigating are
1 incitement to hatred. now i would love to hear your theory on how this charge will be made to stick considering that the only hatred it will have incited is from among the soldiers of destiny.
2 indecency. if this one sticks then you open the door for bras and underpants having to be painted on to nude paintings and statues of all types which is clearly a farce. will sports players now be arrested and charged for swopping shirts i wonder.
3 criminal damage. which amounts to a nail in the wall of an art gallery.
this whole storm in a tea cup has almost certainly been incited by some loo laa on the taoiseachs staff or constituency office ringing rte screeching about it and the g1ts on the other end of the phone capitulating immediately.
they are two mildly amusing paintings of the upper body of the taoiseach in suggestive poses. there is nothing even remotely indecenty about them. this is the first time i have seen them and to be honest i am stunned at how bland they are considering the hoo haa and breast beating that is going on.
there are certainly bully boy tactics in operation here but it is not on the side of the people who hung the paintings.
the object of the investigation is to intimidate anyone else who might feel like having a go at the spanners who blew the biggest boom in the history of the state.
would you ever fcuk off with your idea that anyone is going to jail. the guards and the establishment wouldn`t dream of allowing this to go to court as it will make a laughing stock of them. it would also give another opportunity for newspapers and tv stations to show the paintings all over again in three or six months
just goes to show how much inherent power the fianna fail party wield over the institutions of the state such as rte and the guards which is the real story behind this incident.

Biffo and co are denying any involvement in the garda investigation, though it`s clear that they did order it behind the scenes. The cop that came round to Today FM told the `the powers that be` wanted yer man found.
Gobs**es, had they let the whole thing slide, it`d be forgotten by tomorrow. Instead. it`ll be dragged up - and rightly so - every time evidence of FF`s continued attempts to intimidate the media arise.

What an extraordinarily stupid post. It`s a completely harmless and amusing practical joke that`s been blown totally out of proportion by the Fianna Fail stasi, who are turning themselves into an international laughing stock on the back of this stunt. If Cowen didn`t want to be an object of lampoonery or ridicule, then he shouldn`t have run for public office and certainly shouldn`t have become taoiseach. As TAN97 says, the only bullyboys these paintings have brought out of the woodwork belong to FF. Shame on RTE for acquiescing to their wishes and apologising for reporting a factually correct, interesting news story, then pulling it.

It was an interesting news story and RTE broadcast it on the news. How is that classless? And how can anyone connected with FF accuse anyone else of having no class? There`s some seriously pompous, humourlous galoots on this forum.

This whole episode is a diversion.
No more than the Grand Slam or Bernard Dunne it distracts peoples attention from the real issues.
We have a hopeless Government, a pathetic opposition, economy going down the tubes, massive corruption in our financial services and all we can focus on is some paintings that would embarass a Junior Cert student for their quality.

Blown out of all proportion like the Muhammad cartoons controversy. They are paintings……….an artist’s impression. It’s not as if Cowen posed nude for them.
FF would want to cop themselves on and drop the Broy Harrier tactics against the media and arts world, and focus on resolving the country’s economic problems.

To be fair the office of taoiseach has not deserved respect for some time... respect is earned... Cowen has a long way to go before he gets that off the country...

What have these paintings got to do with the Office of the Taoiseach?

Pictures probably flatter him to be honest. I`m sure he looks far worse nude in real life. I actually can`t believe they are talking about jailing the person behind them. Do they not have more urgent things to be getting on with?

Are you seriously suggesting that RTE news should no longer carry factual news stories that might be of public interest without getting government approval first?

No Not at all.
But surely you agree that they should broadcast such stories without hidden agendas of their own. I don`t have a problem with them covering the story but the manner in which they did. I would have the same problem if covered similar Story on ,Say, Steve Staunton when he was Manager of Ireland and under pressure. They are the National broadcaster and a bit of etiquette and respect surely must be expected.
If this story were carried in this fashion on Mary McAleese what would your opinion be?
