Kilroy points the way for the Rossies in under 21 final
Connacht under 21 Hurling final
ROSCOMMON......3-19
MAYO..............0-10
By Michael O Connor.
A better balanced Roscommon side had their loyal supporters cheering at the final whistle as they captured the Connacht under 21 hurling final in Athleague. Famed GAA names littered the Roscommon team list as they were celebrating their minor hurling side reaching the minor B semi final at the weekend. Mayo for their part were entering the tie as underdogs, yet started the game in sterling fashion with Brian Hunt hitting his sides first score seconds after Niall Kilroy drew first blood for the home side. Roscommon threatened to suppress Mayo’s ambitions with five unanswered scores between the 7th and 17th minutes of a well contested first half. Niall Kilroy (3 ) and a brace from the impressive Adrian Purcell were the point scorers before Kenny Feeney (3 ) brought the Western side back into the game as Roscommon faltered somewhat for five minutes with just a single response from Padraig Kelly.
With less than eight minutes left in the first half Roscommon regained their superiority in the half back lines and midfield sectors as John Coyne and Kilroy (2 ) rounded off the first half score with a perfect ten. Kenny Feeney hit back with the final score of the opening half for Mayo to leave the eventual winners double score leaders (0-10 ) to (0-5 ) at the interval.
The story for each management team entering the dressing room was at once a contrast and the same. Roscommon required a quick influx of scores to finish the game as contest. Mayo for their part needed two goals. Prior to the throw in the odds and the pundits were suggesting that the Rossies would be the team most likely to succeed due to a more balanced panel yet when Mayo narrowed the gap to just four points with the opening score of the second half coming from Kevin Feeney it appeared to all and sundry that a battle to the finish might emerge.
This was fools gold however as in the intervening two minutes the game was sealed tight ad the title delivered in no uncertain fashion with a brace of goals blasted past the helpless Andrew Butler by Roscommon corner forwards Anthony Leahy and John Coyne between the 32nd and 34th minutes.
Mayo to their credit refused to surrender their laurels and in the intervening outscored the eventual winners (0-4 ) to (0-2 ) with Kevin Feeney (3 ) and Cathal Freeman on target as Roscommon had responses from Niall Kilroy and Alan Moore as Roscommon led comfortably (2-12 ) to (0-10 ) . Both sides emptied their benches as Mayo’s spirit dampened slightly as Roscommon upped the ante in the final ten minutes and outscored their opponents (1-7 ) to (0-0 ) . Adrian Purcell (0-3 ) , Niall Kilroy (1-0 ) , Eamonn Keane, James Lawlor and James Donnelly were amongst the scorers.
The winners were served well by Peter Kellaghan, Declan Dowling, Padraig Kelly, James Donnelly, Niall Kilroy, Adrian Purcell, John Coyne, Alan Moore and Anthony Leahy. Mayo had strong displays in defeat from NUIG trio Andrew Butler, Colin Staunton, Cathal Freeman making a welcome return from injury, Kevin Feeney, Alan Moore, Eamonn Kenny and Brian Hunt.
