I understand from a report on RTÉ radio this morning that the `Irish Daily Mail` are publishing extracts from Donal Óg Cusack`s book. It appears that, in the course of the book, he comes out as being gay.
For the moment, I am content to allow discussion of Cusack`s book on its merits as an important book on GAA and sport in contemporary Ireland. I am not, however, going to allow any of the usual homphopic comments that have been triggered in the past by references to Cusack on this forum.
Any breach of this condition will result in permanent withdrawal of User privileges. Furthermore, in order to oversee and manage this situation, this is the only topic that will be allowed about the book or Cusack. Anyone who attempts to start a rival topic will also have their User privileges withdrawn, permanently.
Please cooperate with us in maintaining a mature, reasonable discussion on this topic.

A welcome, responsible approach.
Have to laugh when you see people like Dónal Óg and Joe Higgins in such a publication.

Fair dues to him. I don`t agree with all his GPA stuff but this can`t have been easy for him.
Hopefully the GAA`s players, fans, administrators etc will take a lead on this that all other sporting organisations can follow. It is a statistical improbability that there are no gay soccer or rugby players or other GAA players. If this goes well for him it could make life a bit easier for many other people out there.

He`s meant to be on The Late Late next Friday night. Have heard that the GAA stuff in the book is fairly hard-hitting with high figures in both Cork County Board and GAA at national level coming in for flak. Should be interesting.

Looking forward to reading Donal Ogs book, hope it isnt a rerun of Michael Moynihans book `Blood Brothers`, which was a good story on the Cork hurling strikes

I know there was always the rumours and he always got a fair bit of abuse from the terraces, but I am sure most people like me thought it was just made up bulls** because of who he was, but would this have been a well known fact in his local area?
It can`t have been easy for him to come out, I am sure he will find out who his real friends are now.

Fair dues for him coming out. Eventhough things have moved on in this area over the last 20 years, it must have taken a lot of courage to have admitted this.
Hopefully this won`t turn out like Justin Fashanu in England where his admittance of being gay may have driven other players sexualities under ground.
I think in this day age, it should really be a nothing story and people should just move on.

Every one for themselves.
It can`t have been easy for him to do this.
Best of luck to him.

Read the serialisation this morning.
He admits he discussed with Dessie Farrell the possibility of the GPA and it`s members turning professional which is a very worrying development. It`s no surprise and an all out strike of intercounty players in the next decade in pursuit of pay for play is on the way imo.
The predictable dig at Gerald McCarthy also came.

I always knew that the main aim of Donal Og and the GPA was `pay for play` and it is only a matter of time. God help the gaa then and all its volunteers.

Fair play to him for not hiding from it in his book, but I can`t see this making it any easier for other lads to come out publicly in future unfortunately. As you say on the law of averages, there would be at least a couple of that persuasion in any dressing room, yet this is the first time someone has said it in public. I would worry about the terrace treatment he will get next year, reading Christy O`Connor`s Last Man Standing book a few years ago gave an insight into the treatment he was getting at that stage.
Looking forward to the book, I have a big stack of GAA books to get through now, what a great way to see out the winter!

clonliffe, dont worry about the terrace treatment - what he received from some gutless clown with a megaphone in thurles against tipp this year was outrageous and in the UK would have resulted in ejection from the ground and a subsequent court case, but as usual it was left go for the whole stadium to hear for at least 15 minutes while cork warmed up.
as for the man completely honest in everything he has done and sia , while certainly a stength in a world where half truths and spin are paramount might not always have worked in his favour

Look it this was a rumour for a while and his team mates all knew - I say good luck to him. He is one brave motherf*********. Typical Donal Og. He couldn`t write a book without being straight. You have to say that for him. Forget homophobia, which of course there will be a bit of, you can only admire his pluck

he craves publicity and is only happy when in the limelight. Strikes, books, gpa he is not happy unless he is a public figure. The GAA should really worry because with guys like him leading the gpa it is only a mattter of time before real trouble erupts. Politics his ultimate goal??

Just read this post on another forum (boards.ie ) ......
When he told his father he was gay....the response was....
"it was hard enough defending you over the short puck outs but now this....",
Brilliant!

Fair play to the lad for using his profile within the GAA to line his pockets regardless of the fall out. Doing business behind closed doors just doesn`t pay these days. Fully expect him to be in the thick of any controversy in the years to come be it in Cork or the GPA. One of the best keepers of the past 10 years but foreby that I cannot abide the man and what he stands for.

more publicity around the strikes is the last thing that Cork GAA needs now.
still if there are books to be sold and money to be made, the overall good of Cork GAA will have to take a back seat.

Correct. His sexuality is completely unimportant. What is important are his ideas for the future of the G.A.A. We`ve all seen what happens when he doesn`t get his own way and that should not get lost in the mix. He`s a serious danger to the vast majority who believe that the G.A.A. should be run by its members and not the elite.
